Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure that has proven to be a very successful operation over the last sixteen years. The procedure involves removing 70-80% of the stomach and reforming the remaining part of the stomach into a small, tube-like shape. This procedure is designed to stave hunger and increase satiety with smaller portions.

How Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Work?

The sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that’s performed laparoscopically. This means small incisions are made along the upper abdomen through which a small instrument with a small camera is inserted to provide a better view of the treatment area without the need for large incisions.

During the procedure, a portion of the stomach will be removed and the rest will be reformed into a much smaller size. By limiting the size of the stomach, it helps to restrict the amount of food patients are able to consume. As a result, patients who have undergone the procedure experience a significant loss in weight. On average, patients can expect an excess body weight loss of 75% or more. The Sleeve offers dramatic improvements in health including diabetes and hypertension resolution.

Why Undergo A Sleeve Gastrectomy

For many people, losing weight is a long journey that sometimes comes with a plateau. At some point, the strict dieting and exercise routines do little to provide the results they are looking for. In cases such as these, a sleeve gastrectomy is used to help those struggling with their weight loss journey, finally reach their health/body goals.

The procedure is done to help those who are overweight reduce their risk of weight-related health issues such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Heart disease

When compared to similar procedures, the Sleeve Gastrectomy has an advantage over the Lap-Band in that there is no foreign body implanted, and in contrast to the Gastric Bypass, there is less change in the absorptive capacity of nutrients.

Risks Associated with Sleeve Gastrectomy

Every major surgery comes with potential health risks and it is important to fully understand them before undergoing the procedure. Some risks may include blood clots, infection, and leaks from the stomach. Working with an experienced surgeon who you trust can help avoid unnecessary risks and ensure that you experience the best results.

In addition to the physical risks involved with sleeve gastrectomy, there are also psychological risks that potential patients should be aware of. The surgery can have a profound effect on a patient’s self-perception of themselves and their relationships. If you feel as though the surgery has taken a toll on your psychological wellbeing, you can be sure that we’ll be here to help you through every step of the process.

Candidates for Sleeve Gastrectomy

Ideal candidates for a sleeve gastrectomy are those with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, or those who are experiencing health problems associated with excessive weight. Patients should also be willing to adhere to a strict healthy lifestyle after the procedure to maintain the results without any adverse reactions.
