Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding This surgery (LAP BAND®) involves a restrictive ring that is placed on the upper portion of the stomach making a small pouch, which results in the patient feeling satiated with smaller portions. There is no effect on the absorption of nutrients. It is an FDA-approved procedure that’s ideal for helping people struggling with weight loss, effectively reduce their weight.
The Gastric Banding Procedure
The Gastric Banding Procedure is a laparoscopic procedure that involves making a small incision into the abdomen of the patient and inserting an adjustable silicone tube into the stomach cavity. A camera is then inserted through the tube to record the inside of the stomach to assist the surgeon in properly placing the silicone band around the stomach, without having to make any large incisions. This procedure is done under the administration of general anesthesia while the band is being fitted. The band is placed on the upper part of the stomach and a long tube is attached to the band. The tube can be accessed through a port that’s placed under the abdomen. Once the procedure is complete, the patient is kept overnight for observation and initial recovery.
The restrictive capacity of the band may be adjusted by injecting or withdrawing fluid through the port. The success of this device heavily depends on good patient compliance and maintenance.
Why Undergo Gastric Banding Surgery?
Having a small pouch can help reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold at any given time. As a result, patients can expect to feel more full after eating smaller portions of food. This can help reduce hunger and decrease food intake, which results in a reduction of weight over the course of time.
The Risks Involved With Gastric Banding
The gastric banding procedure comes with some degree of risk. These may include inflammation and gastric scarring. As with any surgical procedure, however, it is important that you do your research and work with one whom you trust. This can help avoid unnecessary complications and steer you on the path to better results.
Candidates for Gastric Banding
In general, gastric banding is recommended if a patient’s body mass index (BMI) is 35 or above. We will perform an in-depth assessment of your body as a whole and discuss your medical history to help ascertain if you’d make a good candidate for gastric banding.
Patients looking to undergo the procedure should be open to following a few precautionary measures leading into the surgery. These instructions will include avoiding alcohol and tobacco products and stopping the use of certain medications. We’ll cover these instructions in more depth during your consultation.
